For more than twenty years, I've carried around a promise I made to myself.
In 2001, I walked into work expecting an ordinary day and walked out without a job.
Like millions of Americans, most of my retirement savings were inside a 401(k).
At first, I assumed that money couldn't be touched until I reached age 59½. Then a former co-worker told me something I had never known: because we had been laid off, those retirement funds were immediately available to us.
Facing financial hardship after losing my job, I was forced to withdraw the entire balance of my 401(k) and close the account. The amount I received was approximately $38,000.
Later, sitting at my kitchen table, I began reviewing the paperwork that came with my retirement account. As I turned the pages, I discovered something that stopped me in my tracks.
Before the market decline of 2001 (the Dot-Com Bubble bursting), my 401(k) had grown to more than $128,000.
I had no idea.
Seeing those numbers on paper changed the direction of my life forever.
What happened to me wasn't unique.
Every year, thousands of hardworking people move closer to retirement without realizing that the rules change as they get older.
When you're 30 or 40, time can often help you recover from a major market decline.
But when you're approaching retirement—or already retired—time becomes one of your most valuable assets... and it's the one asset you can't replace.
That's why understanding risk isn't just important.
It's essential.
My mission isn't to tell you what to do.
It's to make sure you understand the retirement decisions in front of you before you make them.
Because the more you understand...
the more confident you'll become.
And confidence creates peace of mind.
